Being a Great Communication Partner to Your Loved One with AS
Description

Communication is a crucial part to our everyday lives. Join a speech-language pathologist for an engaging, family-focused presentation designed to support the communication needs of individuals with Angelman Syndrome across all ages and abilities. This session centers on empowering families with tools that make communication easier, more effective, and more respectful of autonomy. Participants will learn about communication passports—a simple yet powerful way to share essential information about an individual’s communication style, preferences, sensory needs, motivators, and best supports. Communication passports help quickly and efficiently train new communication partners, from teachers and caregivers to community members, improving understanding and quality of life. The presentation will also explore levels of cueing—from full support to independence—and how to intentionally fade prompts to encourage greater autonomy. Families will learn how thoughtful cueing can reduce frustration, build confidence, and support meaningful language use throughout the day. By the end of the session, participants will: Understand how communication passports support consistency and dignity Have a practical tool to succinctly share their child’s unique needs Learn how to teach language intentionally and thoughtfully, rather than reactively Gain strategies to support independence while honoring individual communication styles Whether your goal is smoother daily routines, stronger partnerships, or greater independence, this presentation offers real-world strategies families can use immediately—because everyone deserves to be understood.
